Charlie McNeil was only 12 years old in 1867 when he received his first pocket diary as a

Christmas gift from his mother. Within the small pages of that journal and several that

followed, Charlie kept a daily accounting of his activities, local news and national events.

His perceptive observations, expressive entries and wry sense of humor all provide for

an unusual view into life for a 12 - 15-year-old growing up in 19th century Torrington.
