MAYOR ELICKER, HEALTH DIRECTOR BOND COMMEMORATE NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK IN NEW HAVEN

Public Health is Where You Are three community scenesNEW HAVEN, CT -- Today, Mayor Elicker joined Health Director Maritza Bond to kick-off and commemorate National Public Health Week (NPHW) in the City of New Haven. This year, the national theme is “Public Health is Where You Are.”

Observed the first full week of April every year, the New Haven Health Department has scheduled events from April 4 – April 10, 2022, which relate to the NPHW daily theme for each day. The daily themes include: accessibility, climate change, community, mental wellness, public health workforce, world health day, and racism.

Developed each year by the American Public Health Association, the national campaign educates the public, policymakers, and practitioners about issues related to each year's theme. The week is also dedicated to highlighting the contributions of public health and champions the role of strong public health systems.

“This year’s theme of National Public Health Week is especially important to our city,” said Mayor Elicker. “It gives us the opportunity to reflect on the challenges of the past two years and recognizes that while we have made great strides in providing accessible healthcare to more New Haven residents, we still have more work to do to ensure that everyone in our city has the opportunity to lead a healthier life.”

Director Bond stated, “National Public Health Week is a growing movement that advocates for an equitable and holistic approach to public health, which aligns perfectly with the mission of the New Haven Health Department: to ensure and advocate for the health and well-being of all New Haven residents.  This is an important week for us to join the national conversation around how we can better serve New Haven residents. We strive to accomplish the theme every day, as our team have been on the frontlines making every effort to protect our health and wellness, but this week is a great opportunity to collaborate with the community on ways we can further improve our approach to fulfilling our mission.”
