Architect David Castro’s Dungeon Forward line of caps and hats is just as sleek as his designs. The brand recently signed licensing contracts with more than 23 HBCUs to bring stylish and innovative pieces to their schools. The HBCU collection features Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Texas Southern University, Howard University, Tuskegee University, and more. Castro founded the headwear company in 2008 while he was still in college out of a pure desire to create. Originally the brand started with hand painted t-shirts that his best friend would make and sell. Castro's best friend, who was Bahamian, invited Castro to come to Carnival and suggested that they sell the t-shirts. It was a success. Others warned him that their business plan wasn't sustainable, but Castro continued trying and eventually opened a flagship store in The Bahamas, which was originally called DungeonForwardFashion. To drum up business, Castro and his friend paid taxi drivers to bring tourists to their store. The duo thought it was an excellent way to spread the brand name globally. And for a while, the business did well until a hurricane hit the island. Although the storm did not affect the store, it hit the tourist areas, which was their customer base, so they decided to close the store. Castro's friend decided to leave the business to him and follow other pursuits. |
