Let me introduce JOHN BERRY MEACHUM
In 1847, John Berry Meachum, Entrepreneur, Educator and Pastor, started a school where he charged $1 per person for tuition, and attracted approximately 300 students. Once Missouri passed a law banning the education of negros, he circumvented the legislation and built a steamboat and equipped it with a library, desks and chairs and sailed off on the Mississippi River beyond state law jurisdiction and started what was known as the "Floating Freedom School".
One of Meachum's students, James Milton Turner, founded Lincoln Institute after the Civil War, the first school of higher education for black students in Missouri, which later became Lincoln University.
