GirlTrek To Host Global Walk For Harriet Tubman on March 10th
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” - Matthew 18:20

(Washington, D.C. – February 11, 2022) On March 10th, GirlTrek’s one million members will lead the largest “moving tribute” to Harriet Tubman in history.

All around the world, Black women will stop everything and walk 2.22 miles for Harriet Tubman’s 200th birthday. They will walk for freedom and healing for Black women worldwide.

Black women are facing real threats to their very lives. The average life expectancy of Black women globally is 65 years old. In 2022, Black women are dying at higher rates than any other group of women on the planet. GirlTrek has studied and understands the root causes - exhaustion, chronic stress, exploitative labor, deep loneliness,  generational trauma, and systemic injustice.

This is a crisis in plain sight and no one is talking about it.

We say “no more!”

We are the daughters of Harriet Tubman and we will never ask permission to save our own lives.

Join GirlTrek, America’s largest health movement with over one million members, as we step out to pay tribute to our hero by putting feet to our prayers for total healing.

It’s easy to participate:

STEP 1: RSVP! Tell us you're joining here

STEP 2: SPREAD THE WORD! Put a special pair of sneakers by the door now as a reminder. Don’t move them until March 10, 2022. Snap a picture and share it on your social channels using #WEAREHARRIET.

STEP 3: WALK! On March 10th, lace up, open your front door and walk with us. Wherever you are in the world, start your walk in solidarity at sunrise. Imagine a wave of healing in our communities. As we walk, we will reflect on, and make commitments to our own personal health.

You can walk alone, Harriet-style or invite two or three of your closest family members, neighbors or friends. This is a sacred walk so we encourage you to refrain from making this a large event - distracted by permits and logistics. Please encourage women at your churches and schools to walk where they are - from their own front doors and to check in on the day of by sharing a photo using the hashtag #WEAREHARRIET

STEP 4: LISTEN LIVE! If you are walking alone, grab your earbuds and join GirlTrek’s co-founders for a live broadcast and special episode of the viral “walking podcast” called Black History Bootcamp. Co-Founder Vanessa Garrison will be joining members of Harriet Tubman‘s family live from Harriet’s home in Auburn, New York.

To listen live at 9AM ET, dial (646) 876-9923, code: 734464325. Please note, if you are not able to listen live, the episode will be loaded the following day on Apple, Spotify, and Amazon podcasts.

STEP 5: CELEBRATE! To celebrate Harriet and how we’re honoring her, please join GirlTrek on Facebook Live later that same day as GirlTrek co-founder Morgan Dixon will be broadcasting live from Harriet’s ancestral home in West Africa at The Ashanti Kingdom in Kumasi. Harriet Tubman‘s grandmother was an Ashanti woman. GirlTrek will gather women from this mighty tribe to pay tribute.

Note on Gear: GirlTrek encourages everyone to wear “superhero blue” because we believe we are the “Harriet’s of our Households" and there are no greater heroes. If you would like an official GirlTrek shirt, click here.  Offerings include our special edition "#WEAREHARRIET" hoodie and t-shirt.

When cameras are off, we will not stop.
GirlTrek is on a mission. After a decade of work mobilizing 1 million members, the nonprofit organization has set a new public intention to inspire the 700 million Black women on the planet to “walk, talk and solve problems together.”  Their mission is joy and justice. GirlTrek sees a future where Black women get to live their healthiest, most fulfilled lives. They will advocate for collective action, policy and systems change that increases the life expectancy of Black women by 10 years in 10 years. Learn to lead like Harriet!
If the spirit moves you during your walk on March 10th, we invite you to keep the momentum going by continuing to walk 30 minutes a day for consecutive 10 days as you learn to be a GirlTrek leader. From March 11-21, GirlTrek co-founders will host a 30-minute walk-and-talks as they share everything you need to know to start a walking team in your neighborhood. Join us in establishing your own daily discipline of self-care, then come back and get your sisters. Dial into the walking podcast at 12 PM ET each day at (646) 876-9923, Code: 734464325.

Walking Works!
Daily walking is the single most powerful thing a woman can do to jumpstart a healthy lifestyle. Walking alone ameliorates risk factors to early death - decreasing symptoms of heart disease, diabetes, and depression, each by nearly 50%.

Our 2022 aim is to activate and support new teams in 1000 historic neighborhoods.  GirlTrek just grew its staff by 100 coaches this season to support volunteers to that victory.

This will be historic!
Don’t let the movement stop in your inbox. Forward it. Feature it. Mark your calendars and spread the word. Walk-in solidarity with GirlTrek on March 10th.
