This talk decodes the mythology of Gaṇeśa, the elephant-headed lord of wisdom and auspicious beginnings

You will learn the significance of how Gaṇeśa got his elephant’s head, and also why he is worshipped first among the host of Hindu gods. You will also learn about how mythological storytelling serves as a rich repository of insight into the personal and spiritual growth at the heart of yoga. Specific yoga postures will also be covered.

Your Instructor

Dr. Raj Balkaran

Dr. Raj Balkaran is a prolific scholar of Indian mythology, having authored The Goddess and the King in Indian Myth (Routledge 2018), The Goddess and the Sun in Indian Myth (Routledge 2020), and several academic articles and book chapters. He is also a spiritual adept, having been initiated into ancient Indian wisdom traditions by multiple masters, engaged in daily practice for two decades. A seasoned online educator, he teaches at Yogic Studies and the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies where he also serves on their Course Development Board. He is also the Founder of the online School of Indian Wisdom where he creates and delivers original online courses combining scholarship, storytelling, and spirituality to apply Indian wisdom teachings to modern life.
