For many decades, educators and policymakers have been aware of the overexposure of Black children to exclusionary discipline (e.g., suspensions, expulsions). While many policies and practice-based interventions have been implemented in recent years, the disproportionality between Black children and children of color is still present. School suspensions of Black children is evident at all levels of education, however, the most concerning is in early childhood education (birth through 8). This webinar will present an overview of national data on school suspensions and address the factors that lead to inequities in the application of school discipline. In addition, the presenters will provide a call to action to support on-the-ground efforts in both teacher preparation and applied practice and draw implications for how the recommended strategies and practices can be employed in other states.
