Parole Justice is Racial Justice

Dear partner,

We are saddened to report that this week two people died of Covid-19 in New York State prisons. We mourn with the families and call for more decarceration in the midst of this public health crisis. In October 2021, we released a report that showed that every three days someone dies inside a New York State prison. With the continued spread of Covid-19 in prisons, incarcerated people are at an increased risk of dying behind bars.

Public health officials agree that the most effective way to slow the spread of Covid-19 behind bars and decrease deaths is through decarceration. Clemency and increasing opportunities for parole are just some of the ways our elected officials can do their part to protected vulnerable incarcerated New Yorkers.

If you would like to take action in response to the deaths behind bars, join the People's Campaign for Parole Justice for the next virtual advocacy day. In honor of Black History Month, advocates will gather for a press conference and meetings with legislators in support of the Elder Parole and Fair + Timely Parole bills. Learn more about them here
