AFROPUNK PRESENTS - SOUND THERAPY SESSIONS: THE MASKERADE Afropunk in partnership with Pillar Consulting and CEO Dr. Bahby Banks will curate conversations covering social matters ranging from Covid-19 to healthcare. Through this partnership our audience will be able to engage in a unique experience of expert driven community conversations to promote knowledge, understanding, and empathy within our Intersecting identities. Live music, deep conversations, and communal hope and healing are all on the table with AFROPUNK sound therapy sessions.
Our first event, THE MASKERADE, medical experts Dr. Tasha Dixon, Dr. Byron Young, Dr. Bahby Banks and host, Ebonee Davis along with invited guests discussed the challenges of healthcare in the Black community during the Covid-19 pandemic through a candid and engaging social conversation. CEO of Pillar Consulting, a global program evaluation research firm, helps organizations assess the impact of their initiatives. In her role, Dr. Banks partners with grassroots, community-based and non-profit organizations to provide consultation on the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of their efforts. A scholar-activist committed to equity and inclusion, Dr. Banks actively engages leaders in strategic thought around health communication and community engagement and advocacy. Banks’ work has led to a career that has spanned the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Australia, including contributions to the World Health Organization, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Instituto Promundo, and academic institutions across the United States.
Dr. Tasha Dixon:
Dr. Tasha Dixon currently serves as the Family Medicine Lead Attending at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center. As a Dallas native, Dr. Dixon completed her Master of Public Health Degree at the University of Texas, her medical training at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and her family medicine postgraduate training and Fellowship at Harbor UCLA Medical Center/Los Angeles County. Dr. Dixon currently serves on various local and county wide committees to support and ensure that health care is delivered in a safe, just and culturally appropriate manner, while working towards addressing medical mistrust.
Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Dixon has worked on the frontlines helping to treat and educate patients around the COVID 19 virus and now, advocacy for COVID 19 vaccines. Dr. Byron Young:
A child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, as well as an emotional wellness program developer and consultant. He works primarily as a psychiatrist and psychiatric consultant with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health’s specialized foster care program. Dr. Young is passionate about being impactful in under-resourced and marginalized communities, particularly communities of color, in both his daily work with the LA County DMH and various community oriented projects. He focuses on the intersection of mental health, social justice/racial justice, and the arts through his initiative DointItWell.org. Ebonee Davis:
An American model, poet, actor and activist from Seattle, Washington. Over the last four years Ebonee has become one of the fashion industry’s most prominent voices, advocating for representation and diversity in front of the camera as well as behind it. In 2017, after penning an open letter to the fashion industry illuminating the importance of representation, Ebonee was asked to do a TED Talk at the University of Nevada on the topic of systemic bias in fashion which she titled “Black Girl Magic in the Fashion Industry”. Following her talk, she has given countless talks, participated on panels, and written for numerous publications, all while using her platform as a model to uplift, inspire and create space for those whose visibility has been systematically denied. Ebonee currently resides in Los Angeles.
V.C.R:
V.C.R, born Veronica Camille Ratliff, is a multidisciplinary recording artist, composer, violinist, and published author that uses music and literature to inspire and uplift her audience. Born into a musical family in Memphis Tennessee, she was classically trained in violin and gospel choir beginning at age five. Homeschooled, her mother taught her to read and write which inspired her to cultivate her creative gifts until present day. V.C.R uses her eclectic musical background to carefully craft songs that are not only healing and one-of-kind but direct tributes to her favorite singers and composers such as Minnie Riperton, JDilla, Chaka Khan, and Tchaikovsky. Devin Tracy:
Devin Tracy's journey traces back to his birthplace of Florida. Shortly after graduating from High School, he took a leap of faith and moved from the South to the city of New York where he drew inspiration from his studies of Jazz and Vocals to cultivate his own sound. Devin's music can only be described as a soulful journey. Known for his boom-bap yet smooth sound dipped in honey comes his incredibly sweet vocals.
