Dear Tom, You are invited to the Peace & Planet Online International Conference, "Building our Movements & Impacting the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference" which will take place via Zoom on January 4, 2022 10 AM New York time. REGISTER HERE. The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference will take place in New York City from January 4 to 28. Diplomats will converge on the U.N. with the ostensible goal of holding governments accountable to fulfill the Treaty’s promise. Close to $100 billion of public funds are spent annually on nuclear weapons at the expense of urgent human needs and investment in common security. Without a strong multilateral commitment to nuclear disarmament, this will continue to rise. To send a powerful message to the U.N. and to build our national and international abolition and peace movements, the Peace and Planet network has organized an online conference in which movement leaders and analysts will share their expectations for the Review Conference and spell out what our governments must do do to ensure full implementation of the Treaty. Join this remarkable conference, whose speakers include: Tarja Cronberg SIPRI (Finland), Maria Pia Devoto (Argentina), Sharon Dolev METO (Israel) Alexey Gromyko Russian Academy of Sciences_(Russia) Emad Kiyaei METO (Iran), Marion Kupker (Germany), Taeho Lee PSPD (South Korea), Fred Lubang, PCBLNISA (Philippines), Jasmine Owens (USA), Matthew Parks COSATU (South Africa), Liv Torres LO Union (Norway), Yayoi Tsuchida of Gensuikyo (Japan). Nihon Hidankyo (Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations) is holding the "Three Quarters of A Century After Hiroshima and Nagasaki" exhibition in the UN lobby between December 9 and January 11. The exhibit contains 48 photo panels, along with some material and video recordings. The paintings were drawn by the students of Hiroshima City Motomachi High School. These students spent several months with the Hibakusha, listened to their stories and produced the paintings, resulting in a powerful message about the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. Please consider bringing youth and students to the exhibit. Due to restrictions imposed on visits to the UN building, only the guided tour visitors are allowed to go into the lobby. Only a limited number of "In Person Guided Tour" tickets (priced at $22 for adults and $15 for seniors and students) are available and can be ordered online HERE.
Please sign this Syracuse Peace Council petition to our New York State, county, and local municipal elected officials to Step Back from the Brink of Nuclear War. Syracuse Peace Council’s Nuclear Free World Committee has been hard at work building support for the Back from the Brink campaign to abolish nuclear weapons. We need your help to expand this grassroots movement across the Peace Action New York State network. Organizations, faith communities, elected officials, and bodies of government at all levels can endorse and amplify the Back from the Brink campaign’s call to action and move us closer to a world free of the nuclear threat. If your organization or faith community is interested in endorsing, contact info@panys.org.
On December 9, 2021, the New York City Council voted overwhelmingly (41 to 5) on Nuclear Disarmament legislation: Int. 1621 and Res 976. Click here to visit PANYS's new page devoted to this good news. This legislation calls for the NYC pension funds to be divested from any exposure to nuclear weapons production and maintenance, reaffirms New York City as a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone, and signs NYC on to the ICAN Cities Appeal, and calls on the United States to support and join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). It also creates an nuclear disarmament and nuclear weapons-free zone advisory committee to support the city in maintaining its commitment to being a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone. If you are NYC resident, please thank your Councilmember. Find your Councilmember HERE.
