Black Art in America

The Black Fine Arts Fair was a success!
The artists loved it, as did the gallerists, and especially the local community. Many mentioned how Columbus never had anything like it before with so much high quality Black art in one space. It was truly a great experience, but don't just take it from us!

See about 20 pictures from the show here.

Here's what Ms. Odella Welch, a Columbus native artist and patron of the Black Fine Arts Fair had to say:

"For me, it means that for the first time in the city of Columbus, the entire community could visualize the majesty and brilliance of African American art in all forms. It has never happened before in Columbus. An entire venue for Black artists. I wish there was some way for it to become institutionalized in this city. It's just amazing. I love it and look forward to being here next year."

To top the cake, Black Art in America's very own, Najee Dorsey, was honored.

BAIA partnered with Wendy Kendrick, a Columbus resident who's also the current artist-in-residence of The Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson Residency. In addition to getting to know Wendy, we also got an opportunity to tour the late Aminah Robinson's stunning home, which now hosts the artists-in-residence.

Quality Artwork You Can Buy for $1,000 or Less

If you’re a new or an aspiring art collector, you may be delaying purchasing a work because you feel overwhelmed by the volume of information about the various artists and types of art available. Perhaps you may have tried to do some research on your own, only to come away thinking that you don’t know enough to make a good decision. Worse, after seeing works for thousands of dollars, you now believe that you don’t have enough money to buy a quality work of art.

Livin’ Abstractions: New Works By Cedric Michael Cox

Cedric Michael Cox is best known for his paintings and drawings which fall between surrealism and representational abstraction. His work expresses themes ranging from mythical literature to the relationships between the physical body, musical allegories, natural, and man-made landscapes.

As a student at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, Cox was awarded a fellowship to study at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. After receiving his BFA in Painting in 1999, he began to exhibit locally and regionally.

"By 1985, the demanding medical administrator and Korean War vet commonly referred to as 'O.T.' had been a force in the Atlanta medical scene for the better part of two decades. A graduate of Lincoln University and Meharry Medical College, O.T.’s string of appointments and accomplishments was an impressive list for any doctor, no less an African American in the post-civil rights era South. They included his founding of the Westside Anesthesia Association; his roles as Chief of Staff and of Anesthesiology at Southwest Community Hospital; as board member of the Metropolitan Atlanta Health Plan; as Chairman of the Board of the West End Medical Association; and as the Atlanta Medical Association’s 1985 'Man of the Year.'"

Artist David Driskell died last year of COVID-19 at age 88, but he's finally getting his due. For the first time, his paintings are the center of attention in a major way. Driskell was best known for his work as an historian and curator, raising the profile of African-American art and artists. Jeffrey Brown has this report for PBS arts and culture series, CANVAS.
