This week we cover an independent investigation that shows police were in the wrong in a young man’s death, another young man arrested while peacefully walking home from work, and new details of an assassination orchestrated by law enforcement. Elijah McClain Guilty Until Proven Innocent An independent investigation found that police and paramedics were in the wrong while attempting to arrest Elijah McClain and that ultimately killed him. This is the same racist reasoning that lands Black people behind bars or worse on a daily basis! We are disproportionately stopped, arrested, and jailed by a white supremacist criminal legal system that was designed to discriminate against us. Rodney Reese Couldn’t Even Walk In Peace Rodney Reese was walking home from work in the aftermath of one of the worst snow storms to hit Texas, but police found this an opportune time to arrest him for “being a pedestrian in the roadway.” With 6-7 inches of snow, freezing ice scattered throughout, and the trauma of having to be harassed by authorities, officers chose not to harass Rodney. The charges were later dropped because it was an unlawful arrest. This is yet another example of how Black people are made into perpetual suspects. The FBI and NYPDs’ Involvement In Malcolm X Assassination Malcolm X’s family revealed a letter written by former NYPD officer Raymond A. Wood outlining how law enforcement entrapped two members of Malcolm X’s security details just days before his assassination. This left the entrance to the infamous ballroom unsecured and resulted in the death of a man fighting for justice for Black people. The lengths law enforcement has been willing to go to to not only imprison us, but to destroy us and our movements is unimaginable.
