Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 to October 15 and celebrates culture and history of Hispanic Americans. This month, we're celebrating with a few of our favorite artists from our collection, diverse as they come in terms of their medium, subject matter, background, and stories. Enjoy learning about these inspiring individuals, as well as the works of many others on our collections site.

Malaquias Montoya

Malaquias Montoya is an accomplished poster artist who was an important figure in the Chicano Art Movement of the 1960s, and co-founded the Mexican American Liberation Front, one of the first Chicano arts collectives in the US.

Consuelo Underwood’s work in weaving and textile design holds powerful messages about her Chicana heritage and calls attention to the dangers of trying to cross the border from Mexico into the US.

Favianna Rodriguez

Favianna Rodriguez is an interdisciplinary artist, cultural organizer, and political activist based in Oakland. Her art and collaborative projects address themes of migration, economic inequality, gender justice, and ecology.

Carlos Cortez

Carlos Cortez was a graphic artist, muralist, poet, and political activist. He joined the Industrial Workers of the World in 1947 and wrote articles and drew cartoons for the union's newspaper for several decades.

duck + chick is an Oakland-based company founded by two young sisters, Brianna, 10, and Ashley, 6, who wanted to raise money to help others. duck + chick handcrafts all of their leather products and donates a portion of proceeds to nonprofits in need.
