September 26: William Lanson Statue unveiled at the Farmington Canal

William Lanson was a formerly enslaved Black man who arrived in New Haven at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In 1810, he led the extension of New Haven’s Long Wharf by almost 1,500 feet, a move that allowed larger boats to dock in the city’s port—and the city to compete with nearby ports including New York.

William Lanson's statue is being sculpted by Dana King. To learn more about William Lanson and the project, please check out
this site (which is where all the above listed information came from).

Shared Histories Symposium

The Shared Histories Symposium is designed to share the results of the three-year Gilder Lehrman Center Shared Histories Africa Institute, funded by the Robina Foundation, with a broad base of teachers and students in New England. The Shared Histories program provides ongoing opportunities for teachers and students in the United States and Africa to discuss shared concerns about equity, representation, and human rights. During this symposium, U.S. teachers who have been working with South African and Sierra Leonean teachers, along with a selection of their students, will present classroom projects generated from the GLC Shared Histories Africa Institute. 2020 Walk to End Alzheimer's (Virtual and Drive Thru)

The world may look a little different right now, but one thing hasn’t changed: the commitment to ending Alzheimer’s. This year, Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is everywhere — on every sidewalk, track, and trail. Support the Yale Affinity Group team for the 2020 Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. This year’s event won’t be a large in-person gathering — instead, we invite you to walk in small teams of friends and family while others in your community do the same. Because we are all still walking and fundraising for the same thing: a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. You can also virtually watch the opening and promise garden ceremony Saturday, September 26 at 10 am, and/or drive through the West Haven Green Gazebo at 12-2 pm to experience the view-only planted promise garden. 2020 Making Strides of Greater New Haven Drive Thru

This years drive thru event begins at at Lighthouse Point Park at 10:30 a.m. on October 18th, and will end at 11:30 a.m. We encourage all teams, participants, and survivors attending to decorate their car on October 18th and drive a symbolic pre-determined lap throughout the park. Pictures next to the start and finish line will be taken via event staff and posted to the events Facebook page. Exiting the vehicles will be prohibited. Let’s also play some B-I-N-G-O and help spread H-O-P-E! We realize being stuck at home isn’t something we are all used to. Now more than ever survivors and their families need us. The work the American Cancer Society does is critical, and every step we take walking in October is one step closer to a cure. Download this fun
