Pereira, who is white, was elected to the all-Democrat City Council last fall and previously served on the Board of Education. She has been lauded as a passionate government watchdog, but also chastised for a combative, insulting style.
Brown, who is Black, is a political newcomer who successfully ran for the school board last year.
After Brown last week posted videos on Facebook celebrating the city’s removal of the Christopher Columbus statue from Seaside Park, Pereira, who had been helping negotiate a deal to keep the monument there, criticized Brown.
“I just want to say that Bridgeport Board of Education member Bobbi Brown conducts herself in an incredibly disrespectful and quite frankly ‘ghetto’ manner,” Pereira wrote on her personal Facebook page. “Her mechanics and grammar are quite poor. In addition, her behavior during the removal of the Christopher Columbus statue was juvenile, unprofessional and just overall moronic.”
