Resource Highlight: Guidance on Sensative Topics
"When major events happen in the world around us, or on this campus, you might wonder how to address it. Do you say anything at all, or just go on like nothing happened? Do you ask students how they are thinking and feeling? Do you have relevant expertise that might help students better understand the situation, or is this outside the scope of your course? Even when it might be appropriate to invite a discussion, managing hot topics and current events that deeply affect us and our students can be challenging for anyone." This resource from University of Maryland has helpful information to review and discuss.
Resource Highlight: Aperture Education
For the next eight weeks, we will send you a brief, parent-friendly guide focusing on a key social-emotional strength, we're now in week 3 of 8 in sending you digital resources to help your families teach SEL at home. Each weekly edition will include developmentally appropriate strategy adaptations for all children from infancy through high school so you can send the same resource to every family in your district. These resources can be shared directly with families and were created to help teach SEL at home. This week, we're focusing on Goal-Directed Behavior. Click here or photo to access this resource!
Resource Highlight: Coping with Quarantine
This week's resource highlight comes from The Urban Assembly. The SEL team has created a Coping with Quarantine resource so that you can reflect upon and goal-set around how you tap into your SEL skills during this time.

SEL Learning for Black Students is Ineffective when its Culture-Blind
"Racial trauma is prevalent but students of color cannot be helped with SEL prevention and intervention methods that in any way ignore and discount how both culture-blindness and cultural assaults dehumanize people of color; these illustrate how both are antithetical to everything that SEL stands for in principal and practice. When the cultural traditions of people of color are policed in this and other ways, there is no such thing as focusing on the whole child of color."
