ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! ELDERS DEMONSTRATE OUTRAGE THIS MONDAY!

Dear Friends:

Many of us, who are 60+ years of age, have felt that we couldn’t join the impressive demonstrations that have been occurring nationwide because of our concern for safety precautions. Instead, we have signed petitions, called friends, sent money, dedicated ourselves to getting out the progressive vote and much more. Yet, the sense of NOT being a part of this important movement is difficult when in the past, we were usually on the front lines of protest and advocacy.  And our older voices need to be heard as the stereotype exists that older people are conservative or worse yet “Trumpers”.

That’s why we are organizing a demonstration for people 60 and up on the New Haven Green for this Monday, 6/8 at noon! Please read the message below and forward it to any other people who you believe might be interested. This email is getting sent to people who might be under 60 but have older friends to whom it could be forwarded.

Thanks and Hope to see you on the Green (from a distance)!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!  ELDERS DEMONSTRATE OUTRAGE THIS MONDAY!

Come out in solidarity to support Black lives, against police brutality and for institutional change in our communities that affirms the absolute value of all people.

Join your fellow elders (60 and up) a rally on the New Haven Green on Monday, June 8 at noon across from City Hall, 195 Church St. Expressions of sorrow and anger and advocacy for change, all in a safe space. We will breathe in silence for nine minutes in memory of George Floyd – and all the other victims of police brutality. Masks are required and your comfortable lawn chairs are optionalas well as gloves and eye protection (glasses, sunglasses). Markers will display 8 ft distances.

Bring signs or materials (poster paper, large markers, chalk) to make signs that we can leave on the Green or better yet post in your neighborhood, home window or wherever you want to demonstrate your sorrow and outrage. (Turn those old political yard signs inside out with new, potent and meaningful messages calling for action and advocacy.)

Come together with your fellow age cohort to show that the time is NOW to commit to end racial injustice and police brutality against black and brown people, to overhaul the criminal injustice system and to shift resources from police to community needs like mental health and substance abuse treatment, education, medical care and job creation.

Let’s:
Demand Police Accountability
Speak out against white supremacy and racial inequality
No more George Floyds, Breonna Taylors, Ahmaud Arberys, Tony McDades and so many more.

Sponsored by a collection of Outraged Older People
