MATTY DEGRADI SHOW CURATED BY ARLOW ARTIST SIGRUN MUELLER @MITCHELL POSTPONED
|
|
A note from the curator:
"Last year, my dear friend and wonderful artist Matty Dagradi turned 90 years (you wouldn't believe how much she is still knocking out new collages!). But at one point last year, she was at a very low point - I had never seen her like this - thinking "it's all over for me now, I guess..." and thoughts like this. I said, no, it's absolutely not over and we'll show them how much you are still working and creating. I was emptying my studio and organize a big show on all walls for her, only to remember that people don't come up here to our building (ARTWALK, CWOS), so I asked good friend Sharon Lovett-Graf at Mitchell Library to give us the gallery space for a show. Sharon immediately was enthusiastic about a celebration of Matty DaGradi's 90 years and scheduled two months for us, April/May 2020. You can imagine, what a motivation that was for her to produce even more new works for the show. I designed an invitation card and a flyer - everything was ready for print. And now the Coronavirus! Needless to say, Sharon had to cancel, NHFPL is of course closed. I can't describe to you, how heartbroken Matty was and is; at her age, she thinks of course this was the last chance for a show even though she is in top shape for her age. I assured her that the show was not cancelled, but only postponed, and that we'd do the show asap, which cheered her up a little bit..."

“My mom taught me to embroider when I was a small girl. Then came sewing, crocheting, knitting. Later on I became a weaver. Working with textiles aligned with my tendencies towards perfection; something that the shadow boxes take full advantage of.
Making these small pieces of work has been joyous. Small, disparate pieces with past lives finding a new one. I like the perceived limitations of the rectangle, and that the items visibly balance without worrying about how they do so physically. Framing the works allows the viewer to focus on the small items, looking, often for the first time, at their design, function, and material.”
