Urban Resources Initiative : A Major New Haven Asset

pruning winter 2020 (Bay Hanson)
Hello Tom Ficklin,

lunch talk on bioswales on Feb 24, winter workdays on Feb 26 and 29, a social fundraiser on Mar 7, a conference Mar 13-15. Despite this being our "off-season", we have a lot to share with you. (See details below.)

Good news! Our winter pruning team has revisited all 462 street trees and we are finishing up the parks trees in celebration of their 5th year in the ground. We are gearing up to begin planting 200 trees and constructing bioswales again this spring (beginning late March).

It's not too late! We invite you to give our spring tree planting crews a boost of support with a donation to URI that will be doubled by Sustainable CT. Help us provide paid green job training to people with barriers to employment! Thank you to the 25 people who have already contributed!

We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

Colleen, Chris, Matt, Caro, Will and Anna
Monday, Feb 24
12 p.m. - 1 p.m.
Burke Auditorium, Kroon Hall, 195 Prospect Street

Professor Gaboury Benoit and City Engineer Giovanni Zinn will present on the design, function and measured performance of the bioswales installed in downtown New Haven by Urban Resources Initiative. This talk is part of a the Hixon Center for Urban Ecology at Yale Spring Speaker Series and is open to the public. Lunch will be provided.

The winter is a perfect time to cut vines that are taking down older trees and preventing new trees from growing. It feels invigorating to be out in the cold doing good work with good people. As a bonus the heavy clothing protects tree savers from thorns. Questions? Call Chris O. at 203-627-0178.

Social and Ecological Infrastructure for Recidivism Reduction
March 13 - 15, 2020
Kroon Hall, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies
Register by midnight to get the early bird rate.

There has been a growing interest in policies, procedures or practices that promote public safety and reduce recidivism. At the same time, local ecological sustainability initiatives are increasingly common in communities across the United States. In recent decades, corrections departments, community-based organizations, and educational institutions have brought these ecological and criminological fields of research, policy and practice together in new ways.

This national conference will convene researchers, practitioners, community leaders, and policy makers who work at the intersection of correctional programs, community-based interventions and ecological sustainability. Together we will learn, connect, recharge, and plan. Join us!
Adopt a Tree

If you live in New Haven and want to adopt a free tree, URI's GreenSkills team is happy to come plant one in front of your home this spring! Thanks to a partnership with the City of New Haven's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Trees!
