Dear Mr. Marder:

As you know, I’m currently working with the 1619 committee at SCSU. The 1619 committee is planning a week of events to Commemorate the first documented slaves to arrive in the US. The purpose of the commemorative events that we are proposing is to honor the strength, perseverance, ingenuity, and national and global contributions of the descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States over the last four hundred years. Like many institutions across the nation, we are planning events to highlight important issues and themes in African American life and history. We think that Southern Connecticut State University, as the premiere public urban university in New Haven, rich with its own history seeped in African American life, is the perfect place to host such an event. SCSU’s own mission of “academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good” is demonstrated in every aspect of our plans for the commemoration.
I am writing to inform you that you have been selected to receive an award at the 1st Annual 1619 Commemoration Event because of your commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice. Through workshops and lectures, you have helped the SCSU community be exposed to African American history and culture. In addition, as President of the Amistad Committee, you have served as a champion to helping our community become aware of the Amistad experience.  Thank you!
Details regarding the event can be found below.
