Help Us Identify a Community Wide Public Health Challenge and Win a $500 Cash Prize

I hope that you are well! It has been a while, and I hope we can find time to meet soon. In the meantime, can you distribute the attached opportunity widely to your networks? I have included language below, and attached a flyer!

Dear New Haven Neighbors, Colleagues, Activists, Community Leaders, Movers & Shakers:

Dwight Hall at Yale Center for Public Service and Social Justice,  InnovateHealth Yale, the Office of Public Health Practice at Yale School of Public Health, and Tsai CITY are reaching out to you as a community leader/activist to identify a community-wide public health challenges so that we can work collaboratively to plan solutions and find funders.  We are offering a cash prize of $500 for the selected idea.  What are some of the public health challenges in New Haven?  Examples of “public health challenges” are:
  • Low rates of breastfeeding
  • Gun violence among youth
  • Lack of affordable behavioral and mental health services

An example  (adapted from the Centers for Disease Control) of how a person or organization could frame the challenge of promoting breastfeeding:

Starting in 1989, Congress designated a specific portion of each state’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) budget allocation to be used for the promotion and support of breastfeeding among WIC participants. Breastfeeding has been shown to be beneficial to mothers and infants.  More than five years after the government started supporting promotional efforts, breastfeeding rates among WIC participants were considerably lower than for women of higher socioeconomic levels.

Since we want all of New Haven’s babies to get the best start in life possible, what innovative solutions can you think of to promote breastfeeding among New Haven’s WIC participants?

The cash prize in the amount of $500 will be awarded to the individual, group, or organization whose New Haven public health challenge becomes the one we address.
