National African American Male Wellness Walk and Run

Taneha Edwards
Greetings FMBC Family,
Health and Wellness among Black Men has always been a concern for the Brotherhood Ministry. The “KNOW YOUR NUMBERS” partnership with the “100 BLACK MEN OF CHARLOTTE” the past 14 years has brought awareness to health issues, diseases and other concerns among Black Men. Through the free screening at the “KNOW YOUR NUMBERS” Health Symposium, numerous black men got the help and advice they needed, and lives were saved because they were made aware of their numbers.
We want to grow the event and create a family atmosphere. To accomplish this, changes needed to be made. We formed a partnership with the National African American Male Wellness Initiative. The goal of the National African American Male Wellness Initiative is to raise awareness for preventable health diseases.
The National African American Male Wellness Initiative (AAWALK) was established in 2004 to begin the process of empowering men to understand through prevention one can live longer. The awareness campaign is the largest Wellness Initiative of its kind. The Wellness Initiative has provided thousands of resident’s free health screenings resulting in recognition from former President Obama and by having August declared as African American Male Wellness Month by former Governor John Kasich.
This is a FREE Citywide event opened to ALL GENDERS young and old. The main event is the 5K Walk/Run but other activities will be going on at the same time. There will be different types of entertainment; live radio broadcast, TV cameras; live DJ; game area for the kids, vendors and free screening for the black male (blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, prostate cancer, kidney etc.…). Former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt is the Honorary Chair.
Our goal is to have 4,000 people participate in the 5K Walk Run. We need every able body to participate. You can participate individually, as a group, as a ministry or as a family. If half of our congregation participates, we’ll hit our goal. We will also need 100+ volunteers. If you can’t participate in the Walk Run, sign up as a volunteer for the event. Go to www.aawalk.org to register for the event or as a volunteer.
