The Invitation:
Long Wharf Theatre is about to embark on an unprecedented journey, where art and activism will live side-by-side. We are committed to building a boundary-breaking theatre with, for, and by the New Haven community. We are looking for visionary teaching artists to join our growing community, as we work in partnership to reimagine the experiment that is the American Theater.
The Overview:
Long Wharf Theatre has provided high quality education programs for 37 years. Our Education Department’s mission is to have deep and long-lasting partnerships with schools and relationships with students that foster creativity, empathy, teamwork, and appreciation for theatre. We believe that theatre is a powerful tool for social change and for bringing forth the multitude assets in all people. We are interested in process-based work and seeing holistic growth in individual students, as well as student ensembles formed through our programs.
Under the leadership of Education Director Madelyn Ardito, LWT has a roster of professional teaching artists who are skilled at adapting themes from our plays and musicals to existing learning blocks in the classroom, and are committed to working with youth of all grade levels and in classrooms for all subjects.
LWT is seeking applicants for enthusiastic and inspirational teaching artists to implement our wide range of programs offered.
Core programs include:
-Studio School classes, our onsite offerings for k-12 students interested in exploring performance, design, playwriting, and devising techniques.
-The New Haven Regional August Wilson Monologue Competition, an educational and performance based program celebrating the work of August Wilson, and giving students the opportunity to compete at a local and national level.
-In-school and after-school partnerships that celebrate arts integration, social and emotional learning, as well as using theatre for social justice in our community.
-Pre-show school visits surrounding our Student Theatre Series to excite and engage students in the world of the play before attending our 10:30AM student matinees.
LWT is dedicated to providing the framework, training, and support for each of these programs to ensure Teaching Artists have the tools needed to be successful in the classroom, while allowing for the flexibility to let personal strengths and skills shine through. All programs with more than ten students will be taught in a co-teaching model. Teaching Artists will work part time, up to 20 hours a week, from September to June depending on availability and program assignments. This position is not entitled to LWT health and benefits.
The Duties:
+ Attend all department meetings and staff training sessions.
+ Create daily lesson plans from curriculum provided by DOE and EPM that adheres to state standards and/or school needs.
+ Deliver quality theatre instruction based on LWT’s course of study and abide by LWT Education’s training methods to meet students’ need and ability.
+ Report to Director of Education and Education Programs Coordinator about progress of programming.
+ Maintain all records of assigned programming.
+ Serve as an advocate in the community for the mission and vision of the theatre.
+ When needed, produce and direct short plays or scenes for public performances and/or family showcases.
+ When appropriate, attend and assist with department events, such as student matinees and Creative Exchange.
+ Participate in regular meetings to maintain program quality through program assessment.
The Expertise Needed:
+ Applicants should have experience with the K – 12 age range and at least two of the following subjects:
§ Acting
§ Directing
§ Playwriting
§ Musical Theatre
§ Devised Work
§ Ensemble Building
§ Script Analysis
+ A demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of, anti-racism and anti-oppression practices.
+ A demonstrated commitment to collaborative leadership with a robust understanding of organizational culture.
The Salary:
Hourly wage is $20-25/hr based on experience.
The Timeline:
Early September through mid- June.
