"Afropop Worldwide at South By Southwest"

Hello Tom,

On Air This Week:
"Afropop Worldwide at South By Southwest"

In 2019, for the first time, Afropop Worldwide hosted a stage at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. Our lineup featured innovative new sounds out of Africa, including Jojo Abot from Ghana, Adekunle Gold and Aramide from Nigeria, and groundbreaking DJ AfrotroniX and Nsimbi from Uganda. We’ll meet the artists, sample their sets, and take in the growing presence of African music at America’s most essential pop music expo.
Produced by Banning Eyre.

Afro Roots Festival in Miami, April 6

Following SXSW, the Afropop road show continues as Banning and Sean head to Miami to record the Afro Roots Festival on April 6 at the North Beach Bandshell, this year featuring the sublime artists Noura Mint Seymali from Mauritania, and Fatoumata Diawara from Mali. We're sending a shout-out to our listeners on WDNA to meet us there and enjoy an extraordinary night of music. Expect our radio special on the Afro Roots Festival later in the season.

Thanks to our colleagues at Community Arts and Culture, the Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts for producing the Afro Roots Festival. More info.

Afropunk announced the performers for the annual three-day festival in Brooklyn in August, and it looks great. We spotted a few of our favorite South African acts in a lineup as stylistically and artistically diverse as "blackness" itself.

Banning Eyre reviewed the latest album by the Argentinian "Queen of Cumbia," La Yegros. The album's title Suelta means "let loose," and there is a giddy abandon that pervades these 10 tracks, Banning writes.

One of our favorite neo-cumbia bands, Combo Chimbita, is gearing up for a new album and a nationwide tour. Odds are they'll be in your neck of the woods this spring, so get hyped for the new record with their new video.

Speaking of new videos, Malagasy singer Razia Said recorded a beautiful one in St. Lucia for a single from her latest record, The RoadCheck out this beautiful tribute to those who raise the next generation.

Put faces to the names (and tunes!) with Banning's photo wrap-up of our South By Southwest showcase.

Finally, check out pictures of Eddie Palmieri and the Uprising All Starspaying homage to Eddie's big brother Charlie Palmieri at (le) Poisson Rouge Thursday night.
Pleased to share the word about the 25th anniversary gala dinner April 25 held by our fellow organization Shared Interest, which does groundbreaking work in women's economic empowerment throughout southern Africa. More info.
