A set of shackles and a “Green Book” are just two of the impactful items that retired New Haven police officer Jeffrey A. Fletcher will highlight from his collection, “Images of America,” a powerful assemblage of artifacts and memorabilia reflecting the African American experience. Items and images reflecting the period of slavery, the Jim Crow era and the civil rights movement include a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe, and, in counterbalance, a flight jacket and photos from the famed Tuskegee Airmen.

Raised in Colchester, Connecticut by parents who migrated from the South, Fletcher seeks to share the uncomfortable but powerful story of segregation and pain in order to encourage dialogue about America’s controversial past.

Admission is free.
