Fraternity inducts new members into their mentoring group for young males
New Haven, CT, June 18, 2018- The Delta Iota Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. will conduct it second induction ceremony for its Sigma Beta Club mentoring program on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Whitneyville Cultural Commons, 1253 Whitney Avenue, Hamden. The induction ceremony begins at 7 pm, immediately followed by a reception and is open to the public.
The National Sigma Beta Club (NBSC) is a male youth mentoring program of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity developed in 1950. The NSBC’s main objective is to mentor primarily African American and other minority males between 8 to 18 years old, and help them develop wholesome values, leadership skills and social and cultural awareness. The local chapter will include boys from the greater New Haven and Bridgeport area.
“We are excited and proud to have the New Haven chapter of the National Sigma Beta Club – the first chapter in Connecticut,” said Donald McAulay, Sr., President, Delta Iota Sigma Chapter. “We are looking forward to working with these young men and growing the chapter to include more members in the years to come.”
Sigma Beta Club members will meet regularly outside of the school environment to plan and participate in service projects, such as community clean-ups and assistance to the elderly. The students will also explore opportunities for higher education. Additionally, membership in the NBSC provides members the opportunity to meet with the college students and professional men of Phi Beta Sigma.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three African-American male students who desired to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
