Union Theological Seminary will welcome thirty young leaders from across the United States to attend its 5th annual Millennial Leaders Project (MLP) Summer Conference.

View online.   From July 16th – 20th, Union Theological Seminary will welcome thirty young leaders from across the United States to attend its 5th annual Millennial Leaders Project (MLP) Summer Conference. Throughout the United States and around the world, there are a growing number of grassroots social movements working to address inequality and injustice in all its various forms. Many of these movements are being organized and led by millennial generation activists. What often goes unmentioned is the significance of spirituality to these movements and the young activists within them. For some, activism is an expression of their spirituality. For others, activism and social engagement is their spirituality. A highly selective group of Millennials from around the country will convene for this five-day conference to enhance their ability to advocate for a cause and galvanize others around common concerns while exploring the spiritual underpinnings that bring perspective, strength, and resiliency to this work. Throughout the Summer Conference, participants will meet with public officials, hear from community activists, attend capacity building trainings, and explore New York City. The many lessons in leadership and spirituality are designed to provide participants with new networks, skills, and ideas to bring about sustainable positive change in their respective communities. Union's longstanding legacy of leadership in theological education, as well as a history of participating in progressive activism and public engagement, puts Union is in a unique position to host the MLP Summer Conference. This legacy includes Union faculty playing a prominent role in putting forward a progressive religious voice in the public square–from Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich to more recently James Cone, Serene Jones, Cornel West, Michelle Alexander, and Rev. William Barber. MLP Summer Conference speakers have included influential leaders including Linda Sarsour, Eboo Patel, and Rev. Traci Blackmon, and Union faculty members such as Sarah Azaransky, Samuel Cruz, Jerusha Lamptey, and Andrea White. Millennial generation activist, leader and/or organizer (between the ages of 21-36) with a commitment to social justice activism, you are invited to apply. Formal affiliation with a specific religious tradition or community is not a requirement. The only formal requirements for consideration are an interest in the intersections between spirituality and social justice, and a proven track record of service. The MLP Summer Conference will offer a structured time for reflection, and discussion, as well as community and network building-- all in the interest of developing new tools and insights for sustainable social justice work.
