Dear Tom,

Many have traveled to Albany today to meet with elected officials to urge them to pass the Humane Alternatives to Long-Term (HALT) Solitary Confinement Act (A.3080B/S.4784A) this legislative session. We learned just yesterday that the bill is officially in the Assembly's budget plan, a big step towards making the HALT bill law in New York State. But more action is needed.

Here's what you can do with 5 minutes of your time today to support efforts to #HALTsolitary:

CALL your NYS Assembly Member and tell them:  "I live in your district and I oppose solitary confinement. I appreciate that the Assembly Majority included the HALT Act (A.3080B/S.4784A), which will end the torture of solitary and create more humane and effective alternatives, in its criminal justice reform package. Please vote in favor of the bill."  Find your legislator at http://openstates.org/find_your_legislator/

CALL Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390 and tell him:  "I am a New Yorker and I oppose solitary confinement. Colorado now has a limit of 15 consecutive days in solitary confinement, with most serving less, and has dramatically reduced the overall use of solitary. New York must do the same. You have the power to end this torture and make New York a leader in respecting the human rights of all people."   Post this message on Facebook and Twitter using #HALTsolitary and @NYGovCuomo.

CALL your State Senator and tell them:  "I am a New Yorker and I oppose solitary confinement. We need to end its use in New York State prisons and jails. The HALT Act (A.3080B/S.4784A) would end the torture of solitary and create more humane and effective alternatives. Please sign on to co-sponsor the bill."  Find your legislator at http://openstates.org/find_your_legislator/

Together we will end the use and abuse of solitary confinement in New York. For more information about how to get involved, go to http://bit.ly/2Iqy6ZC.

Sincerely,

Carlton S. Mitchell
