Taking the Black Panther from the silver screen to the classroom
The comic turned movie Black Panther will be released in the United States on February 15th, 2018, and as we have seen it is out-selling every previous superhero film in advance tickets. It is set to have one of the biggest opening weekend sales of all time during Black History Month, and one of the biggest opening weekends for a superhero film as well.
Black Panther is, however, more than just another Black film. This comic turned movie describes a Black African world that has never been invaded or colonized by European powers. Wakanda is the 21st century version of Zamunda--more technologically advanced than any other nation on earth and more morally just. Wakanda provides a Black reality and opportunity that only science fiction has ever really contemplated.
Therefore, as responsive educators, it is our duty to analyze the myriad opportunities for how we can bring the Black Panther into our classrooms. Yes, this is a time to feel good and enjoy the beauty of seeing this all-Black cast live out a reality we have never imagined and then after we have sobered up from all that Black excellence, we want you to join NYC Men Teach and Culturally Responsive Educators of the African Diaspora (CREAD) on March 1st, 2018 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. for a private screening and teach-in: Taking the Black Panther from the silver screen to the classroom.
Together we will watch the film and then spend an hour discussing major themes and making connections to K-12 content and the development of a 21st century culturally responsive pedagogy in the image of Black Panther. We will be sharing standards-based resources and curriculum so that you may leave with some tools to use in your classrooms.
Register to hold your spot immediately. Once all seats have been registered we will have a waiting list.
