Documentary photographer Kwame Brathwaite and his son Kwame S. Brathwaitejoin historian Tanisha Ford and designer Mimi Plange to reflect on the impact of Brathwaite Sr.’s pioneering “Black Is Beautiful” photographs.
Join the Black Gotham Experience and the Museum to learn about the stories of free and enslaved Africans in early New Amsterdam as well as Black communities including Weeksville and Seneca Village. Learn how their legacies are connected to New York City today during a day of performance, panel discussions, a scavenger hunt, hands-on mapping, a community fair, and more.
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death, the exhibition traces the civil rights leader’s encounters with New York from the 1950s until his assassination in 1968. The historic images reveal a lesser-known side of King’s work and demonstrate the importance of New York City in the national civil rights movement.
