Repost from Aaron Goode New Havener Ebenezer Don Carlos Bassett, the first African-American ambassador in US history, was appointed ambassador to #Haiti by President Ulysses Grant in 1869. Because Southern states would not permit recognition of the "Black Republic," the US did not recognize Haiti officially until 1862.
