Every year, student organizers in the Association of Native Americans at Yale plan events on Indigenous Peoples’ Day (IPD) weekend for the larger Yale Indigenous community to enjoy and for the education of the broader Yale community. Held on what others recognize as Columbus Day, IPD celebrates the strength, resilience, and beauty of Indigenous communities in the face of settler-colonialism.
With this year’s theme, Transnational Indigeneity, we’d like to show solidarity and collaborate with our Indigenous relatives everywhere. We are co-planning the event with students at La Casa Cultural, and invite the whole campus community to learn more about Indigeneity through a variety of ways during the two-day celebration, which will feature Indigenous foods, music, and scholarship. UMass Dartmouth Professor Margarita Huayhua, a sociocultural anthropologist with a background in linguistic anthropology, video production, translation, Quechua language, and education, is our keynote speaker.
The Yale Native American Arts Council will be holding a photo campaign to celebrate the diverse faces of Indigeneity. Through the photo series people can express what Indigeneity means to them, explain how they have come to understand their Indigenous identity, and/or describe their Indigenous identity. Contact katherine.mccleary@yale.edu with any questions. Join us in viewing the photo campaign following the Indigenous Foods Dinner on Sunday night!
