MAYOR HARP, ALDERS, AND ACTIVISTS TO STAGE FUNDRAISING RALLY SATURDAY TO BENEFIT HURRICANE RELIEF FOR PUERTO RICO

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp, state Representative Juan Candelaria, and a group of New Haven alders, with assistance from staff members of U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, will be joined by a cross-section of New Haven activist groups to stage a day-long fundraising rally Saturday, to benefit New Haven’s hurricane relief efforts and residents of the stricken island of Puerto Rico.

Literally millions of American citizens in Puerto Rico were stranded and left without electricity after Hurricane Maria devastated the island last week. Coordinated, grassroots efforts in New Haven are meant to provide some relief to residents there.

Saturday’s event is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. in Fairhaven’s Quinnipiac River Park. The entertainment and speaking program will be held at the intersection of Front Street and Pierpont Street. Press outlets are encouraged to help promote this urgent humanitarian relief effort. Likewise, reporters are encouraged to cover the event itself.

The grassroots collaboration of New Haven activists working to raise funds for hurricane relief includes members of ARTE Inc., the NHFD, JUNTA for Progressive Action, SAMA, and other nonprofit organizations.

In addition to donations collected at Friday’s football game and Saturday’s rally, donations from individuals can be made at www.arte-inc.com or at https://www.gofundme.com/new-haven-for-puerto-rico. Interested individuals can also send e-mail to arte-inc@comcast.net for more information.
