Witness Stones Panel Discussion

The Witness Stones Committee invites the community to a panel discussion at the Guilford Free Library to discuss the Witness Stones Project and how it relates to what is going on in our country and our world today.

Inspired by the Stolpersteine project in Germany (and with their blessing), the Witness Stones Project hopes to bear witness by installing a marker which recalls an individual enslaved person at a site of significance where they lived, worked, or prayed.  The Project will partner with local schools to help students research the history of an enslaved individual from their community and reconstruct the memory of that person through the written record and, ultimately, with the installation of a commemorative Witness Stone.
The panel will discuss what a Witness Stone in Guilford, CT has in common with a Stolperstein in Berlin, Jars of Soil in Alabama, the Transatlantic Slave Trade Memorial in Bristol, UK, and the “We’re glad you’re our neighbor” signs found throughout Guilford. We will invite the audience to give their insight into how to support justice, equality, and inclusion in our community.
The Witness Stones Project is a Committee of the Guilford Preservation Alliance and sponsored by the Guilford Foundation Youth Advisory Group and the Guilford Fund For Education.
