Dear Thomas,
The relationship of Washington, DC to the incoming white supremacist administration is unique.
Unlike other parts of the country, the new administration, and with it the influx of more white supremacists is going to impact the District. From an increase in displacement of Black communities in the district, the
potential loss of federal funding of DC's vital social services program due to our status as a Sanctuary City, the increase in xenophobia and Islamophobia in the District, and concerns around the relationship of this federal administration to DC, given we don't have statehood, means the District has to be prepared for unique challenges.
In order to discuss some of these issues,
Parisa Bonita Norouzi hosted a discussion on WPFW with a few local organizers on what is at stake for DC and how we can fight back. Our own co-Director, Darakshan Raja was on the show. You can listen to the

Friendship Place, in partnership with Washington Hebrew Congregation, will host a one day Winter Warmth Store on Sunday, December 4 where homeless men and women can "shop" for warm winter clothing and enjoy a hot meal. Volunteers are needed to help sort and display the donated clothing on Thursday, December 1, and to help customers shop on Sunday, December 4.

While campaigns to abolish “Columbus Day” have become widespread, perceptions of Europeans as “discoverers” of a “New World” persist. Calling out these and other colonial myths, Dunbar-Ortiz, a longtime activist for indigenous peoples worldwide, locates their origins in white settlers’ political and territorial goals. Showing how the acquisition of land and natural resources was predicated on erasing Native Americans, Dunbar-Ortiz continues the important work of her classic The Great Sioux Nation, which was the foundational text for the first international conference on Indigenous peoples of the Americas, and her definitive An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States, winner of the 2015 American Book Award.

Support incarcerated LGBTQ folx behind bars this holiday season by taking some time to write them holiday cards. This is the 4th annual Black & Pink international holiday card writing movement! As you can imagine, the holiday season is often a really rough time for folks inside prison. Whatever holidays you may or may not celebrate this time of year, our incarcerated members are often denied the ability to celebrate their traditions in the ways they choose, whether their desire be to celebrate the returning of light for Solstice, the miracle of Hanukkah, the birth story of Jesus, the Black radical tradition of Kwanzaa, New Year’s Day, or something else. All too often our members do not have family and friends to reach out to them with cards or visits, making this time particularly isolating. The cards you will make bring moments of joy, connection and kindness to our members while telling prison staff that people on the outside are watching.
