Reflections by Hanan Hameen regarding recent events at Achievement High School

Hanan Hameen As a certified principal, educator of over 20 years, and curriculum writer for Achievement First Elm City College Prep Middle School I will go on record as to say I understand why these youth walked out. My Artsucation Curriculum was sought out by Achievement First specifically because it is culturally relevant and multiculturally inclusive but teaches from a global standpoint using the African diaspora as the base.

What I have witnessed in that school is the slow erasure of the historical concepts, students randomly being pulled out of class in large groups, inconsistency, lack of nurturing, lack of structure, lack of knowledgeable teachers, and what seemingly looks like training for prison, combat, and /or factory work. They are not allowed to do anything. A student was removed from class for asking a question! Another for not having a pencil. And these are great children getting kicked out of class. There is no room for creativity, critical thinking, and more. Smart enough to follow instructions/orders and push a button.

Needless to say, as much as my curriculum is needed there, I simply will not support the miseducation of our children by people who don't have our people's well being at heart.

Education needs Artsucation in its truest form. We also need our own schools and charter school system, even though the public school system was created for us in particular. In the meantime, homeschool! Remove our youth from this school to prison pipeline created by the racist system based on the myth of white supremacy for the goal of profitable annihilation and control of melanated people throughout the African diaspora.

We need parents to be active in and advocate for the education of their children. We need community members to be active in the community and inside of the schools.

I volunteer my time at a local elementary school every week to run a consistent program based on my Artsucation Curriculum. For over 20 years in New York City and in 3 other states it has worked with all populations, ages, races, ethnicities, and especially with our melanated youth.

The solution is there. People have to take physical action and do less talking. Our children are nothing more than dollar signs to them. If we don't teach them and fight for them then who will? Enough is enough.
