New Campaign Urges America to #OpentheDoor to Better Homes & Communities
#OpenTheDoor, a campaign by Home Matters, was just launched and features a stop-motion animated video, created by LA-based Jesse Dylan's Wondros firm, to creatively bring to life - via the eyes of a child lying with her dollhouse - the importance of home's role in unlocking a person's potential.

Research proves safe homes and communities are linked to better health, education, public safety, and local economies. You can view the video by clicking the photo above.

The campaign also features a national search tool that will connect people who want to donate, volunteer, or are in need of help, to more than 330 Home Matters supporting organizations across America (including NHS of New Haven). The campaign plans to spark a conversation about the lack of safe homes and livable communities, nationally and locally.

The video was sponsored by The MacArthur Foundation and US Bank.
Bike & Build Volunteers with NHS!

Bike & Build is a nonprofit organization that organizes cross-country cycling trips to benefit affordable housing in the United States. In between their riding days, each group takes the time to "build" and volunteer at different organizations that promote affordable housing.
On Wednesday, June 1, NHS welcomed 30 cyclists at the intersection of Sherman Parkway and West Divsion Street. Once there, the group joined another 25 volunteers from the Hopkins School in a massive clean-up around Beaver Ponds Park.
The two groups transformed the strip of land by pulling weeds, planting flowers, picking up trash, and distributing mulch around the trees. It was a beautiful transformation and we encourage everyone to drive by Sherman Parkway to see all of the work that has been done!
You can find more photos of our volunteers on our facebook page
Hopkins Students Clean Up Sherman Parkway!

For five days (May 30 - June 3), seniors from Hopkins School volunteered with NHS to clean up Beaver Ponds Park along Sherman Parkway.
Each day, approximately 25 students braved the 80-degree temps and worked hard to clear the strip of land near West Division Street.
The students spent a lot of time picking up trash that had accumulated by the pond, pulling up weeds, and planting flowers along the street. They even found time to work a bit in the Ivy Street Community Garden as well.
We are so grateful for the students and their volunteer work!

Dorothea Polk comes to NHS as a President's Public Service Fellow senior from the University of New Haven.

Dorothea is Biology and Environmental Science major with a minor in Chemistry. In the future, she has plans to volunteer with the Peace Corps and join the public health workforce.

"I am very excited to spend my summer at an organization like NHS of New Haven that is so involved in the community and has so much to offer. I look forward to the work I will do and the experience I will gain being a part of NHS."

Vishakha Negi is a rising senior at Yale College majoring in biology and history.

In her spare time, Vishakha is involved in health education in the New Haven public schools, writes for The Yale Globalist, and works at the Yale Art Gallery Education Department. She also loves eating: the best way to get her attention is to say "mac and cheese with extra cheese."

After two summers of bio research, Vishakha is looking forward to working with Newhallville residents, addressing issues of public safety, public health, and access to affordable housing. In the future, she hopes to work with nonprofit organizations targeting public health issues.
