The Art of Black Dissent Friday, April 29, 1:30 pm Photography and graphic arts have long played a role in human rights movements. La Tanya S. Autry, the Marcia Brady Tucker Fellow in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Gabriella Svenningsen Omonte, Museum Assistant in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, guide participants in close looking and interactive discussion centered on works related to the African American liberation struggle from the early 20th century to today. The conversation focuses on prints and photographs in the Gallery’s collection, including Elizabeth Catlett’s linocut My Role Has Been Important in the Struggle to Organize the Unorganized (1947) and Rico Gatson’s collage Panthers (2011), along with images circulating in the streets and on social media as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.
