Legendary Poet and Activist Brings Love to Greater New Haven

Abiodun Oyewole, founding member of the famous Last Poets, brings his intimate, full concert experience Rhyme, Rhythm and Song to Whitneyville Culture Center in Hamden, CT on Friday, May 13 at 7 pm. The long time poet, singer and activist promotes his unifying message of cultural knowledge, self-love and community responsibility. Oyewole began his spoken word career in 1968 as the voice of black nationalism in the controversial Last Poets. His intensity he attributes to the life and works of Malcolm X.

All this because the man never
was saying we need to be more. And we heard that. And he said it better than anybody ever said
it. He made it clear to us. So all we wanted to do was to be disciples of Malcolm, in a sense,
using poetry to illuminate the same values that he planted in our head." The Last Poets continues
today and has been credited as one of the major influences of hip hop music and culture.
Oyewole will perform selections from his CD, Love Has No Season, a testament to the power
