Message from Dr. Ron Daniels
All roads in the Pan African world lead to Newark November 16-20 for what has the potential to be one of the most historic great gatherings of people of African descent in the 21st Century – State of the Black World Conference IV (SOBWC IV). We in the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW) made a conscious decision to convene SOBWC IV in Newark and dedicate it to the memory of Amiri Baraka because of the historical significance of the city and Baraka to the Black Freedom Struggle. New Ark, as Baraka called it, was a critical focal point of the movement in the 60’s. A massive rebellion against the oppressive and repressive conditions in the city erupted in July of 1967 and a few weeks later thousands of Black people from around the world gathered in New Ark for the first Black Power Conference. By 1970, with the strong support of the Committee for a Unified New Ark, under the leadership of Baraka, Kenneth B. Gibson was elected the first Black Mayor of the city. Baraka’s influence through the Black Arts and Culture, movement, the Congress of African People and as a proponent of Nationalism, Pan Africanism, Internationalism and Socialism is immeasurable. Now, as we gear-up for SOBWC IV his gifted, dedicated and visionary son, Ras J. Baraka has been elected as “our Mayor” of Newark.
So, we have an opportunity to convene a historic gathering in a historic city under the leadership of a Mayor from a family with a historic legacy! Therefore, we ask you to join with our many friends, allies and supporters from around the U.S. and the Pan African World in making this conference one of the most significant of our times.
