This webinar is the first in the "Building the Inclusive Economy" series, which will lay out key tools and building blocks for equitable local economic growth.

As the country celebrates the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign, join the discussion that will bring this history into current focus by examining a revival of a community economic development tool that is gaining momentum among low-and-moderate-income communities as well as communities of color. Creating and preserving quality jobs for workers and building models for economic self-determination remain of paramount importance in the broader movement to close the racial wealth gap.

The Cooperative Growth Ecosystem report, part of the "Building the Inclusive Economy Series," an initiative of Citi Community Development, highlights cutting-edge economic development models for city leaders and community development practitioners interested in embedding equity, community wealth, and sustainability into their local growth plans. The webinar will introduce the report and be tailored to economic development practitioners, lenders, investors, funders, cooperative developers, technical assistance providers and organizers.

In this webinar, Democracy at Work Institute and Project Equity will discuss approaches to generate new types of business ownership and creating ecosystems that support worker ownership on a broader scale.  This session will cover opportunities and strategies to develop or expand networks for worker-owned businesses and advance economic progress for our communities.  Two of the nation’s leading civil rights organizations which are members of the Asset Building Policy Network will discuss the implications of the worker ownership movement within their respective organizations and local affiliate networks.

Presenters will include:
  • Melissa Hoover, Executive Director of the Democracy at Work Institute
  • Hilary Abell, Co-Founder of Project Equity
  • Cy Richardson, National Urban League
  • Joyce Pisnanont, National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development
