A Night of Generational Importance

Talk about amazing timing. The Washington Post today ran a story focused on students who are the first in their families to go to college. Author Kavitha Cardoza concluded:

“Any serious plan to help these smart, thoughtful young people who have already overcome so many obstacles to get to college must include strategies to address the social, emotional and cultural aspects of their lives.”

The reason the timing is so relevant is because New Haven Promise has teamed with Wells Fargo and Southern Connecticut State to present “First Gen Next Gen” at SCSU’s Lyman Center for Performing Arts on Friday, February 5, at 7 pm.

The initiative will have two components — the screening of the award-winning, Blair Underwood-narrated documentary “First Generation” and a panel discussion with current students and parents willing to share wisdom and advice and answer questions.

It is important that the students of the Greater New Haven community hear about “First Gen Next Gen.” We hope that students and family members can discover that college is possible, but that there are things to do and to avoid.

A copy of the poster in single-page flyer form can be downloaded atFAFSANewHaven.org — a comprehensive source about ‘college affordability’ for all of the region’s students. For those interested in attending, it would be helpful if they could sign up under “Events” on that site.

This story points out why the “First Gen Next Gen” event is vitally important for everyone with a stake in the success of first-generation students. And, frankly, that should be all of us!
