Art & Work: Surviving and Thriving as a Creative Person with Farai Chideya - Events — Housing Works: " MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2016 AT 7:00PM Award-winning author and journalist Farai Chideya leads a panel discussion with New York artists confronting the challenges of being a creative in today's economy. In conjunction with the release of her forthcoming book, The Episodic Career: How to Thrive at Work in the Age of Disruption (Atria Books), Farai spearheads an intimate conversation about balancing art and work in New York City. The participants include a powerhouse group of highly-accomplished local artists: · Tanya Selvaratnam, the author of The Big Lie: Motherhood, Feminism, and the Reality of the Biological Clock, will be performing in March at The Kitchen in Elijah Green. · Photographer Bill Gaskins, an Associate Professor in the Department of Art at Cornell University, is currently engaged in research on a social memoir titled, After Emory: The Crisis and Opportunity of Art in American Higher Education. · Elizabeth Ziff, the singer for the feminist rock band Betty, is a composer and producer known for The L Word, The Out-of-Towners, and other major TV shows and feature films. · Ethan Herschenfeld sings with opera companies worldwide, and has recently been featured on shows such as Girls, Boardwalk Empire, Blue Bloods, Madam Secretary, and many others. Farai Chideya has combined media, technology, and socio-political analysis during her 20-year career as an award-winning author, journalist, professor, and lecturer. She is currently a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, as well as a Senior Writer covering politics and data at ESPN's FiveThirtyEight. She has given thousands of speeches and hosted hundreds of events around the globe. With deep knowledge in a variety of disciplines, including work, politics, culture, race, and technology, Chideya frequently appears on public radio and cable television, commenting for CNN, MSNBC, Fox, CBS, ABC, BET, NPR, and other media. Moderating a Democratic Presidential Debate in 2004, Chideya is also the former longtime host of National Public Radio's News & Notes. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Chideya graduated with a B.A. from Harvard University, where she was elected Chief Marshal, the highest honor accorded to a member of the graduating class.
