Dear friend,
Thirty four years ago today, Mumia was arrested in the early morning hours of December 9th, 1981.

His voice remained silenced for over a decade.

In 1992, Jennifer Beach and I brought recording equipment to Huntington State Prison, where he was on death row. The first step was bringing his voice to life on the airwaves again. That day we began the journey we are now on, a journey with justice and freedom as the goal.

The most compelling analysis I have heard about Mumia comes from Assata Shakur. We share this recording that Walter Turner, host of Africa Today KPFA, did for Prison Radio in 1996, recorded at Radio Havana.

Listen to Assata's powerful message here.

"The first time I heard a tape of one of Mumia's radio broadcasts, it was the first time I fully understood why the United States government was so intent on putting him to death, Mumia, the only African political prisoner on death row, didn't use any inflammatory rhetoric, what he said was so clear, so true, that I had to stop everything I was doing and concentrate on his message ... We could not save Malcolm X, but we can save Mumia. We can save him and we must save him, because we love our Brother, and we need our Brother to help us fight for freedom..." -Assata Shakur
