Emerge Omnimedia:
Akisa is the founder and CEO of Emerge Omnimedia. Emerge focuses on creating opportunities that support artists from Africa and its Diaspora in expressing diverse views through media, music and art. She currently manages the music and art collective, Just A Band as well as other creatives.
Akisa has produced and/or reported for NBC and Black Enterprise among others. She was part of the production team that covered the Westgate Mall terror attack in Nairobi, Kenya for NBC Nightly News.
As a TV producer and media expert, Akisa’s work focuses on the intersectionality of media and art in shaping narratives about Africa. As such, she’s currently hosting a series of discussions at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York that unpacks those themes.
Akisa started her career in academia teaching mathematics to both young adults and college students. She went on to be a representative for the United Federation of Teachers and received the Ely Trachtenberg award for excellence in leadership.
Akisa earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and a Graduate Degree in Journalism from Columbia University. She’s currently a Yale University World Fellow.
