African American Collection: America’s Distorted Images.

New Light High School is hosting the exhibit “African American Collection: America’s Distorted Images.” This very personal and moving exhibit is presented to bring emphasis and focus on several aspects of African American History from the reality of slavery and the slave trade, to the fight for civil rights and the barriers to equality. This collection brings to the modern day urban and rural communities a history which most are only familiar with in books or depicted in movies. This collection contains authentic slave shackles, parts of ledgers that include the accounting and sale of black men, women and children alongside livestock as well as other items from the ‘Jim Crow’ era; pictures, original signs, statutes, KKK regalia and merchandise.

This exhibit is endorsed by the New Light High School’s History Department as ‘history leaping off the page into reality’ and ‘a place to begin meaningful discussion about how and why issues of race continue to dominate the national dialogue today.’
Mr. Jeffrey Fletcher’s exhibit is entitled: “African American Collection: America’s Distorted Images.”
