IFP Member Event: IFP Industry Talks - Case Study:Cartel Land

Part of IFP's "Industry Talks" series, exclusively for IFP members at the Individual level or higher

This event will take place at DCTV (87 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10013)

Wednesday, December 2nd
Doors: 6:30PM
Event: 7:00PM

Most recently nominated for five Cinema Eye Honors, Best Documentary by the Gotham Independent Film Awards, and recipient of the International Documentary Association's "Courage Under Fire" Award, Matthew Heineman's Cartel Land was also the winner of both Best Director and Best Cinematography in the U.S. Documentary competition at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

Comfortably sitting in the how-did-they-do-that category of cinema verité, the film is leaving viewers completely immersed and in awe of the directorial achievement. Hailed by New York Magazine as "one of the year's most important documentaries," Cartel Land looks at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy - the murderous Mexican drug cartels.

For this intimate Case Study, we will be joined by Heineman, editor Matthew Hamachek, and cinematographer Matt Porwoll to discuss how this crew gained such an unprecedented amount of access while simultaneously constructing a thoughtful feature documentary about the Mexican drug war.

IFP Screen Forward Presents Cronies! Opens December 11

A 2015 Sundance hit, Michael J. Larnell's Cronies, from Executive Producer Spike Lee, opens Friday, December 11 at the Made in NY Media Center by IFP!

Louis and Jack were best childhood friends, but their present-day relationship is challenged by Louis' new friendships and family priorities, which collide with Jack's loud and aggressive behavior.

The growing rift between them becomes unavoidable when Jack unexpectedly meets Louis' new friend, Andrew, and Jack realizes that their plans don't include him. Refusing to accept his exclusion, Jack forces himself into Louis and Andrew's lives for the day, derailing their plans and needling their friendship. Louis is surprised by Jack's blatant jealousy of Andrew and his frustration boils over when Jack tells Andrew a dark secret about their childhood.

Racing Extinction

Airs Wednesday, December 2nd on the Discovery Channel. Check local listings

Directed by Louie Psihoyos, written by Mark Monroe, produced by Olivia Ahnemann and Fisher Stevens
Utilizing covert tactics and state-of-the-art technology, Oscar winner Louie Psihoyos (The Cove) assembles a team of artists and activists to expose the hidden world of extinction. Two worlds drive extinction across the globe, potentially resulting in the loss of half of all species: the international wildlife trade creates bogus markets at the expense of creatures that have survived on this planet for millions of years, and the oil and gas companies hide in plain sight with pollutants they don't want the rest of us to see .

Racing Extinction exposes these two worlds in an inspiring affirmation to preserve life as we know it.

Christmas, Again

Opens December 3rd at the Museum of Modern Art at 11 W 53rd St, New York, NY 10019

Directed, Written, and Produced by Charles Poekel
MoMA presents a weeklong theatrical run of Christmas, Again, one of the highlights of New Directors/New Films 2015. The forlorn Noel (Kentucker Audley) pulls long, cold nights as a Christmas-tree vendor in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. As obnoxious, indifferent, or downright bizarre customers come and go, doing little to restore Noel's faith in humanity, only the flirtatious innuendos of one woman and the drunken pleas of another seem to lift him out of his funk.

Writer-director Charles Poekel has transformed three years of "fieldwork" peddling evergreens on the streets of New York into a sharply observed and wistfully comic portrait of urban loneliness and companionship. While Christmas, Again heralds a promising newcomer in Poekel, it also confirms several great young talents of American indie cinema: actors Audley and Hannah Gross, editor Robert Greene, and cinematographer Sean Price Williams.

Christmas, Again is an alumnus of IFP's Independent Filmmaker Labs. For more information on tickets, click here.
