South Carolina Reminds Us That Teachers and School Police Have Biases Too


 
Thank goodness for cell phone videos! Most of us felt our stomachs churn as we watched a hulky police officer drag and slam a 16-year old girl from her desk because she would not hand over her cell phone and leave the classroom. (If you have not seen the 30 second video, I highly encourage you to click here to view it.)

In this South Carolina school district, the disproportionate discipline of Black students has been a concern. Although Black students make up 56% of the student body, they account for 77% of the suspensions. Click here to read more about the role of race, bias in teaching, and what South Carolina needs to consider in order to move forward.
