Born in 1833, the son and
grandson of renowned
Black Governors of Der-
by, Connecticut, Mr. Bas-
sett became the first Afri-
can American accepted to New Britain’s State Normal School, the parent institution of Central Connecticut State University. Before becoming ambassador, Mr. Bassett was principal of Philadelphia’s Institute for Colored Youth, which became Cheney University, the nation’s first historically black college. New Haven was his home for many years.
