Corporate Member of the Week: Major League Baseball

The mission of theDiverse Business Partners  (DBP)  program is to promote efficiency and profitability for Major League Baseball and its Clubs while extending Baseball's ability to contribute to the economic growth, strength and well-being of diverse communities.

MLB has been at the forefront of professional sports in recognizing the importance of diversity, both on and off the field. In 1998, Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig, authorized the creation of the DBP program, an economically driven business initiative established to cultivate new and existing partnerships with minority- and women-owned businesses, by increasing opportunities for minorities and women to participate in the procurement activities of MLB. Since the formation and initial implementation stages of the DBP program, MLB has incurred expenditures of over $1 billion with diverse-owned businesses, making DBP an industry-leading program.

Five critical factors have contributed to this success:

* Proactive Leadership
* Commitment to Sound Business Practices
* Priority on Partnerships
* Structure and Process that Yield Long-Term Success
* Accountability

In 2012, MLB held the inaugural MLB Diversity Business Summit, which is the premier sports employment conference and supplier diversity trade fair. This two-day event allows job seekers and entrepreneurs the unique opportunity of meeting with MLB's Clubs at both the Major League and Minor League levels as well as sponsorship partners. The Diversity Business Summit has been held in Chicago, Houston and New York, co-hosted by the Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros and New York Yankees, respectively. The 2016 MLB Diversity Business Summit will take place March 8-9th in Phoenix, AZ, co-hosted by the Arizona Diamondbacks. For more information about attending the MLB Diversity Business Summit, please visit  www.mlb.com/diversitysummit .
